Adult-Use: 21 and Up
If you're 21 or older, you can legally purchase cannabis from any licensed California retailer — no card, no recommendation, no paperwork beyond your ID. This has been the law since Proposition 64 took full effect in 2018, and it applies to California residents and out-of-state visitors equally. Tourists from Nevada, New York, or anywhere else are welcome at the counter, as long as the ID is valid and the math says 21+.

Medical Patients: 18 and Up
Californians 18 and older can purchase cannabis with a physician's recommendation for medical use. Under the state's Compassionate Use Act, patients with a valid recommendation can shop the medicinal side of a licensed dispensary, and patients under 21 who hold one aren't limited to CBD-only products — they can access the full medical menu.

What IDs Are Accepted
Licensed dispensaries accept government-issued photo identification that shows your name, date of birth, and photo. In practice, that means:
- A state-issued driver's license or ID card — from California or any other state for adult-use purchases
- A valid passport or passport card
- A U.S. military ID
The ID must be current — expired documents don't fly, even if they're only a day past. Medical patients should bring their physician's recommendation or state-issued Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMIC) along with photo ID.
What Happens at Check-In
First-timers are often surprised by how professional the process is. You'll show your ID to a receptionist or security staff member at the entrance. They'll verify your age and, on your first visit, scan or enter your information into the store's system — a compliance requirement, not a marketing list. Medical patients also present their recommendation so the higher patient limits apply at checkout.

A Few Things That Stay Off-Limits
Being able to buy doesn't mean being able to consume anywhere. California's rules on where and how are consistent statewide:
- Private property only. Consumption is legal on private property (with the property owner's permission). Public use — sidewalks, parks, beaches, bars — is illegal, and many cities add their own fines.
- No driving under the influence. Cannabis DUI is enforced like alcohol DUI, and it's illegal to have an open container in the car. Keep purchases sealed in the trunk on the drive home.
- No crossing state lines. Not to Nevada, not on a plane, not in the mail. Federal law governs the borders, and cannabis remains federally illegal.

Why Medical Patients Get More
Holding a medical recommendation comes with real, tangible advantages in California:
- Higher purchase and possession limits. Adult-use customers are capped at 28.5 grams of flower and 8 grams of concentrate per day; patients can possess and purchase significantly more — up to eight ounces of dried flower under state law, or more with a physician's specific recommendation.
- Tax savings with the state MMIC. Patients who register for the state's Medical Marijuana Identification Card through their county health department are exempt from sales and use tax on cannabis purchases — a meaningful discount that adds up fast for regular patients.
